		<description>no.... not macho at all... lots of reasons in it&#039;s favour, if you&#039;re trained to be able to cope with a wide range of cadence it gives you a very efficient drivetrain (perfect chainline and all that) I always climb faster on fixed unless faced with something like that bastard of a climb in the wind yesterday with the wrong gear. Technical hilly courses I enjoy on the fixed. It&#039;s also a mental thing, I find it much easier to focus on the riding and measuring my effort when I haven&#039;t got to think about what gear I &quot;should&quot; be in. Granted, it&#039;s not for everyone but it is very competitive under the right conditions (which are more varied than you might think).
It&#039;s also something of an &#039;enthusiast thing&#039;... like singlespeed (or fixed even, see 63xc.com) mountainbiking... just adds an extra element of fun and challenge.

for this race if the wind had been less strong or from another direction I would have been fine (well, broken ribs and a funny tummy didn&#039;t help either) I think. I just had a bad day.
